There is a new popular notion that I think will sound familiar to most of you. It is the idea that there was a period of prehistory in which we lived in matriarchal, egalitarian societies that were in harmony with nature. Some say that it didn’t exist others say that it did, I don’t want this to be about finding out who is right in any formal way because that would be very boring for you. I will show you some stuff that makes me think it exists, but read all of this with caution I mostly just look at wikipedia.
The last part was about the Garden of Eden and Prometheus because it has to do with this concept. There will be much more about that, but this part is about ancient matriachy, the sea people and how they may have overturned this system.
I think many of you will have seen something like the infographic below before.
MATRIARCHAL SOCIETY
This idea was popularized by the archaeologist and anthropologist Marija Gimbutas who believed that ‘Old Europe’ was inhabited by matrilineal societies. There is evidence like the Venus of Willendorf figurine which is almost 30,000 years old.
There are many figurines like this found throughout this period and up until the Minoans around 1600 BC. Historians also believe the Minoans were matriarchal, there are records suggesting women had administration roles, they have fancy graves, and figurines.
If you want to know more about this look into The Goddess Movement it is pretty interesting!
There is more, but there is so much more stuff to get through that if you don’t believe me you will have to do more searching yourself. IT IS NOT MY JOB TO EDUCATE YOU!
PROTO-INDO-EUROPEANS
Now I will tell you about Proto-Indo-European language groups and mythology for reasons that will make sense shortly.
First here are two pictures to help you see the area I am talking about and the languages.
Within all of these cultures their pagan mythology generally all has the same stories.
Maybe you have heard of this before, each religion has a sky god who uses thunder and fights a battle against an evil snake. These religions are pretty patriarchal and most of the stories revolve around the Sky Father (Zeus) getting angry about stuff. I could tell you more about them, but if you know about Greek mythology you sort of know the story of the others.
My guides have suggested that I explain more about Greek mythology, but I am choosing to ignore them because I’m assuming most of you know enough about these stories.
The consensus I hear is that the Snake represents a God of the underworld, and the Zeus represents the God of the sky.
The battle between the two came from watching volcano eruptions where lightning comes from the sky due to the eruption. This is a very compelling explanation, but I will tell you another version of this story.
THE SEA PEOPLE
There is not much certainty as to when the Indo-Europeans came to Europe. Some say as early as 8000-5000 BC some say around 3000-2000 BC. Others say that there are many different migrations and that they replaced and invaded one another. I think this is the most likely case, Paul Kretschmer theorizes that first the Proto-Ionians migrated around 2000 BC, then the Hittites settled in Anatolia around 1650 BC and then disappeared in the bronze age collapse in 1200 BC. Then the last migration was the Dorians who arrived around 1200 BC and could have possibly been the sea peoples.
Either way, it does not matter who the sea people were, it matters that they WERE and that they left without a trace. They pillaged the Mediterranean sea and left those civilizations in a dark age.
The whole thing with the sea people is that they do not write things down… I suspect it is because water would splash over the sides of their boats and it made their paper soggy. Of course, they couldn’t use stone tablets because stone is too heavy and would have sank their boats.
P.S.
Chimpanzees are patriarchal, they are ruled by the alpha and they are known to be very violent and aggressive. On the other hand, Bonobos are ruled by ranking females, are typically pacifists, and solve their problems through affection…
